Session 5: Understanding Fabrics 101
This 2 hour class will help students learn the wave tops about the different types of fabric while feeling the hand and characteristics of different fabric samples. Topics covered will include:
-How to “true-up” your fabric on grain
-How to pretreat your fabric based on it’s content and desired finished project
-Natural vs. Synthetic Fibers: When to use which
-Knit vs. Woven
-Pressing requirements for different fabrics
-Needle Requirements for each fabric
-Identifying unknown fibers by discussing the burn test (not actually conducting it in the class)
-How to keep a notebook of the characteristics of the different fabrics swatches you work with along your sewing journey
